“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).
This Time of Shaking? Daily Keep Serving the Lord with Joy
Joshua made a strong declaration. He told the people that no matter what—whether times were good or bad, exciting or dull—he and his whole household would keep following God. He asked the Israelites to make the same choice. He knew if they didn’t, they would eventually go back into old ways of thinking—which they did. After his death, they were slow to take their inheritance and drive out the enemy (Judg. 1:27–36).
This is a good reminder for us. Since we are in such a long period of shaking (which still seems to be increasing), it is especially important to keep reminding ourselves—daily, if necessary—that we and our house will keep serving the Lord. In fact, we need to be especially joyful about it. Deuteronomy 28:47 exhorts us to “serve the Lord with joy and gladness of heart for the abundance of everything.”
I like that, don’t you? As we serve the Lord with joy and gladness, there will be abundance of everything. Here are just three incredible blessings that come our way because we choose to serve the Lord:
1. Renewal and strengthening—We will find the Lord giving us spiritual, emotional, and physical strength. “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength” (Isa. 40:31). Of course we will find ourselves becoming spiritually stronger, but don’t overlook the emotional and physical aspects of this promise. Sounds a bit farfetched perhaps, but in some ways we’ll find ourselves getting younger, stronger, and healthier.
2. Miracles, breakthrough, signs and wonders—Paul teaches us that the single most important factor in bringing forth miracles is apostolic perseverance (2 Cor. 12:12). Regardless of what happens, you don’t give up—you just keep walking with the Lord. You just keep believing. Sooner or later, you will begin to see the miraculous happening. I feel we are entering such an incredible time of miracles. Choosing daily to serve the Lord is simply apostolic perseverance. We will find our faith deepening and becoming bedrock solid.
3. Our whole families being affected and blessed—Joshua said, “As for me and my house.” I look on this as a promise. The more I follow the Lord and walk in His ways, the more He will bless me. That blessing doesn’t just stop with me and my spouse. It’s for my children and their spouses and their children. I should even believe for it to spread to my siblings and extended family.
So, let these three blessings be yours in abundance as you joyfully serve Him daily.
