You Are Already Anointed
It’s a remarkable thing to discover that God has already anointed you for whatever He has already asked you to do. I discovered this back in the 1990s when I joined a prophetic activation seminar at Christian International (Bishop Bill Hamon’s ministry) in Florida.
Until then, I had the more-or-less typical mindset that in order for me to be able to prophesy, God would have to give me new anointing, or more anointing, or some kind of download of supernatural power so that I could prophesy. By that time in my life, I had experienced several occasions when the unction or anointing of the Lord had fallen on me and had given me words to prophesy. So, I well knew prophecy could only operate by the power of the Holy Spirit.
However, the prophets that had been coming to minister at our church in Japan were all trained by Christian International and could prophesy on demand. For them, it was like speaking in tongues. It seemed they could prophesy immediately when asked to do so.
I assumed that in order for me to do as they did, I would need more anointing. Somehow the anointing would have to increase. Maybe they would lay hands on me to impart more anointing or some special gifting. Or maybe I would learn a secret and voila—the power would be there. Or maybe I would have to really fast and pray.
On the contrary, I was surprised at how simple it was. Each session consisted of a short Biblical explanation on some aspect of how to hear the voice of God, and then we were led in a simple activation exercise. The key was to just do it. The instructions were always Bible-based and straightforward. It was up to me to ask for and receive a word of knowledge and then speak it out. As we progressed from receiving and giving impressions—and then into prophetic flow, the key was the same. Just trust the Lord and do it. In other words, the anointing was already there.
I was amazed and delighted. At first, I was fearful and hesitant, but each time I obeyed and spoke out, it worked. I found myself speaking words of knowledge that blessed people. I found myself released into prophetic flow. To be sure, I had to battle with my mind which kept trying to tell me those words were from myself, or were just too simple. But the recipients would testify how precise those prophetic words were about things I had no possible way of knowing, and how blessed they were to receive them (we didn’t know the other attendees or anything about them).
In other words, I discovered that I was already anointed to prophesy, but just didn’t know it. Yet each time I stepped out and “obeyed” those simple, easy-to-understand steps, the Holy Spirit was there.
For Teddy and me, that prophetic activation revolutionized both our lives and our ministry. I immediately took what I had learned back to Japan and activated our church, and then churches all across Japan. From there we expanded into countries including Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Russia, China, and Indonesia.
But the key is always the same. Trainees discover that they were already anointed. All it took was for someone to come and lead them in the simple steps of “how to.” It’s not just for prophesying—but also for any spiritual gift, including healing. We already know that God wants us to heal the sick. It’s not a matter of getting more anointing—it’s a matter of doing it. The anointing is already there.
