“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. … Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37–38).

“Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled” (Heb. 12:15).

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth but what is good … that it may impart grace to the hearer” (Eph. 4:29).

We Can Hinder Overflow of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives

This morning as I was reviewing the seventh Hebrew month, Tishrei, I happened to glance at the phrase “purge yourself of bitterness,” and felt the Holy Spirit was highlighting it for us to look at. Most of us know that to hold on to bitterness is wrong and that not dealing with it can cause great damage for us, as well as affect or spread to others. Hebrews 12:15 states, “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.” We’ll discuss this more in a bit.

We have just come through the Feast of Tabernacles, which emphasizes how much the Lord wants to bless us. He wants us to have great abundance. But He doesn’t just want to fill us—He wants us to be overflowing with Him. Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. … Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37–38).

We can look at this promise not only as a result, but also as kind of a method—or what to do in order to be filled. We are the ones who can choose to “overflow,” and we do this primarily through our speech. The more I actually speak (as well as act and think) words of love, joy, and peace, the more I will find the Lord is releasing love, joy, and peace through me. The more I speak out words that give grace, the more I will find myself being filled with grace and God’s presence. The Holy Spirit will flow out of me. The words I speak are mine, but because the Holy Spirit indwells and fills me, He uses them and multiplies their effect. Look again at the above promise in John 7. Out of us will flow rivers of living water.

Furthermore, it’s also this choosing to speak words of love and grace that creates an atmosphere that the Lord delights to dwell in. The more I eschew words of conflict or criticism and instead speak words that release grace, the more His presence will be with me and in my home and workplace. A major reason for the Feast of Tabernacles is to help us understand the Lord wants to dwell with us. But know that negative words, attitudes, and actions can drive the Holy Spirit away.

What a profound yet simple thing. I can easily be overflowing if I will be careful to release words that carry His grace.

So what about bitterness? Bitterness causes us to be self-centered and self-absorbed, and to focus on our own pain/hurts. It’s difficult for a bitter person to speak out words of faith, life, and grace. This not only robs us of any chance to overflow, but also robs those around us from being blessed by our words of grace.

Let’s recap. First, speak words of grace, faith, and love, and you will find you are overflowing with the Holy Spirit. Second, you will further find His presence filling you, your home, and your workplace. Third, bitterness and self-centeredness are Satan’s tools to keep all of this from us.

Be blessed! Thanks so much for praying!
