“One thing I have desired of the Lord … that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life” (Ps. 27:4).
Greetings once again!
It’s so good to write to you again after our summer break. Thank you for praying for us. We have been refreshed and trust you are as well.
This month is not just about victory and increase, but also about drawing closer to the Lord!
We are in the sixth Hebrew month, Elul, and one of the key themes is that God wants us to expect victory, harvest, and increase. He doesn’t want us to just wait—he wants us to receive. Part of this theme comes from the name of the tribe Gad, which means “a troop comes” (Gen. 30:11). It also comes from Psalm 27, which emphasizes not fearing and having absolute confidence in the Lord We read, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? … Though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident” (Ps. 27:1, 3).
But then David “switches gears” and says, “One thing I have desired of the Lord … that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life” (Ps. 27:4). More than anything, he wants to know the Lord and to be close to Him.
This really is the overriding theme for this month—drawing close to the Lord. We see it when we look at the constellation for this month, Virgo, the maiden. It connects to Song of Solomon 6:3, which states, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.”
The most important thing is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind
What was most important for David is what is most important for us. Jesus told us, “‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment” (Mark 12:30). We all know that when we do this, things go well with us. There is blessing and victory. We also know this is the true desire of our hearts and that that desire was birthed by the Holy Spirit when we came to know Jesus.
We also know that sometimes it’s a struggle
We are well aware of the power of the pull of the world and just how much our flesh wants to yield to it, and even tries to choose friendship with the world over friendship with God. James says, “Friendship with the world is enmity with God” (James 4:4) and is spiritual adultery. He describes how much it actually pains the Lord when we let other things be more important. “He jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us” (James 4:5, NIV).
The promise for us in the life of Jacob!
This struggle is very real, but there is definite victory for us. Interestingly, we can see this in the lives of Esau (the older) and Jacob (the younger) who were born during this month.
While she was pregnant, Rebekah could feel great turmoil in her womb. She inquired of the Lord and He told her she was carrying twins but also told her clearly that the older would serve the younger. We read, “There are two nations in your womb. … One people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger” (Gen. 25:23).
Esau was a profane, worldly man who had no regard for God or spiritual things. As such, he represents—or is a type of—our flesh or our soul. Our flesh wants nothing to do with God and loves “the world.” Jacob, on the other hand, represents the born-again us.
Like Jacob, we often stumble. We often rely on our own strength and scheming. But in the end, Jacob came through. God’s word came to pass—and the older came under the younger.
This is a promise to all of us. The Holy Spirit will help us. The “older” will not prevail. The younger (the born-again you) is stronger. So in these few remaining weeks of the year 5780, let’s keep pressing in to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind.

お久しぶりです。
３週間の夏季休暇の後、再び皆様にアップテートが書けて嬉しいです。お祈りを感謝します。休みの期間中リフレッシュすることが出来ました。皆様はいかがお過ごしでしょうか？
今月は「勝利」と「増加」だけではなく、主に近づくことに焦点を当てるべきです！
へブル暦の６番目の月”エルル”に突入しました。エルルの主要テーマとして、神は私たちが勝利、収穫と増加を期待することを願っています。本テーマは”幸運が来た”（創世記３０章１１節）を意味するガド部族の名前から来ています。また、エルルの月を代表する詩編２７編は、恐れず主に完全な自信をもつことを強調しています。「主は、私の光、私の救い。だれを私は恐れよう。・・・たとい、戦いが私に向かって起こっても、それにも、私は動じない。」（詩編２７編１、３章）
そこで、ダビデは突然詩の流れを変え、ここで一番大事なことを言いました。「私は一つのことを主に願った。・・・私のいのちの日の限り、主の家に住むことを。」（詩編２７編４章）何よりもダビデは主を知り、主に近づくことを望んでいます。
主に近づくことが今月優先されるべきテーマです。今月を代表する星座”おとめ座”にもこのテーマが現れています。おとめ座は雅歌６章３節に結びついています。「私は、私の愛する方のもの。私の愛する方は私のもの。」（雅歌６章３節）
一番大切なことは、心を尽くし、思いを尽くし、知性を尽くし、主を愛することです。
私たちもダビデが一番大切にしていたことを大切にすべきです。イエスは私たちに言いました。「心を尽くし、思いを尽くし、知性を尽くし、力を尽くして、あなたの神である主を愛せよ。（マルコの福音書１２章３０節）」こうすれば色々うまくいくことが分かります。そこには祝福と勝利があります。そしてそれは、私たちがイエスを知った時に聖霊が私たちの心に与えた本当の望みです。
時々葛藤もあることを知ってください。
私たちのほとんどは、この世の引き付ける力のことを知っていると思います。そして私たちの肉は、神と友情関係を築くよりこの世と友になろうとします。ヤコブ書では、”世を愛することは神に敵すること（ヤコブ書４章４節）”であり、霊的な姦淫であると書かれています。神より他の物を大切にした時に、神が感じる痛みについても書かれています。「神は、私たちのうちに住まわせた御霊を、ねたむほどに慕っておられる（ヤコブ書４章５節）」
ヤコブの人生でみる神の約束！
葛藤は非常にリアルでありますが、私たちには確実な勝利があります。興味深いことに、エルルの月に生まれたエサウ（長男）とヤコブの人生でそれを見ることができます。
リベカが妊娠していた時に、お腹の中でぶつかり合いを感じました。主に尋ねると、はっきりとお腹の中に双子がいることと、兄が弟を仕えると言いました。
「すると主は彼女に仰せられた。「二つの国があなたの胎内にあり、二つの国民があなたから分かれ出る。一つの国民は他の国民より強く、兄が弟に仕える。」（創世記２５章２３節）」
エサウの人生は世的なものであり、神や霊的なことについては全く考慮はしていませんでした。彼の人生は私たちの肉や魂を表します。私たちの肉は神を全く考慮せず、”この世”を愛します。その一方で、ヤコブの人生は私たちの再生した人生を表します。
ヤコブと同様につまづく時もあります。自分の力や方法に頼ることもあります。しかし結果としてヤコブは神の期待に応えました。神の約束が果たされ、兄は弟に仕えました。
それが神が私たちに与えた約束です。聖霊は私たちを助けます。”兄＝古いもの”は勝利を得ることは出来ません。”弟＝再生した霊”の方が強いのです。ですから、へブル暦５７８０年は、残りの数週間の間に”心を尽くし、思いを尽くし、知性を尽くし”神の愛に近づきましょう。
